Battery energy storage systems will bring many benefits and opportunities for renewable energy, contributing to ensuring national energy security.

In the context of energy transition being a trend and renewable energy sources increasing, experts say that Vietnam needs to promote investment in battery storage systems to contribute to ensuring national energy security, as well as achieving environmental integration goals and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Ms. Sunita Dubey, Country Delivery Lead in Vietnam, Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) said:

It can be said that in recent years, renewable energy in Vietnam has made remarkable progress and become a bright spot in the region as well as in the world. In particular, Vietnam also shows its spirit and responsibility in the process of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and responding to global climate change with specific commitments at COP 26.

This process continues to be strongly promoted by Vietnamese State leaders both internally and externally and is highly appreciated by the international community.

Recently, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's successful business trip to Australia is a clear demonstration of Vietnam's outstanding developments in the field of clean energy, especially the expansion of renewable energy and integrated Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This process is not only a positive example for countries in the region but also helps Vietnam gain valuable insights on the energy transition journey.

Reasons to promote the development of battery storage systems

The transition of Australia's main energy source from coal to renewable energy has shown the great potential of BESS. With a significant increase in BESS capacity estimated for 2032, Australia is poised to become a regional leader in using this groundbreaking technology. This transition is also particularly urgent even though Australia's domestic coal resources remain abundant; At the same time, it shows the way to change the model towards sustainability and green growth.

Vietnam is in a golden moment on its energy transition journey with huge installed renewable energy capacity and promising expansion plans. Power Plan VIII has outlined a vision for renewable energy deployment in line with global commitments to combat climate change. Large multinational corporations such as Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, Nike, PepsiCo, Proctor and Gamble, Nestle and Unilever have also committed to converting to 100% renewable energy. This indicates that the demand for clean energy sources is increasing in Vietnam.

The benefits that the Battery Energy Storage System will bring to the energy transition process as well as ensuring national energy security

Integrating BESS into the energy infrastructure in Vietnam promises to create favorable conditions to support this transition process. By storing excess energy during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak periods, BESS can increase grid flexibility, reduce emissions and reduce electricity costs. However, to optimize these benefits, Vietnam must accelerate the implementation of BESS and implement additional policies and regulations to support it.

Although Vietnam has taken the first steps on the energy transition journey by including the target of reaching 300 MW of energy storage (BESS) in Power Plan VIII, more strong actions are still needed furthermore. By learning from the experiences of neighboring countries that have proactively integrated BESS into renewable energy production such as Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, Vietnam can accelerate the process towards the future of stable energy development.

According to a report by the world's largest battery manufacturer - Contemporary Amperex Technology Company, the decreasing cost of lithium batteries coupled with technological advances has made BESS affordable and accessible. Vietnam should also take advantage of this trend to attract investment, create more jobs related to green energy and enhance energy security. By harnessing renewable energy for production processes, Vietnam can produce sustainable products while enhancing its economic competitiveness in international markets.

BESS integration is an important key to accelerating the energy transition as Vietnam charts a path towards energy security and sustainability. If we grasp this opportunity, Vietnam will be able to become a leading country in the field of clean energy innovation, promoting economic growth while protecting the common planet for future generations. By embracing the potential of battery storage, Vietnam will usher in an era of even greater prosperity and sustainability.
